HARVARD GSD 1408: THAILAND REMADE

THAILAND REMADE explores technology and its relationship to design in landscape architecture. The studio will develop alternative futures for Thailand’s Lower Chao Phraya floodplain using environmental engineering, landscape construction and technological imagination as a source of design ideas rather than as a set of prescriptive techniques instrumentally shaping the landscape. Class members will give material form and detail to the creation of a design language for water detention and control, reclamation of contaminated soils and water, removal and disposal of municipal waste (hazardous, construction) and imported e-waste and the reconstruction of agriculture, infrastructure and public space using the themes of ‘labor’, ‘permeability’ and ‘beauty’ as a guide within the context of Thai culture and citizens.

HARVARD GSD 1413: BANGKOK REMADE

BANGKOK REMADE advanced alternative futures for the capital of Thailand, Bangkok. The studio focused on environmental engineering, flood control, and land equity to reimagine the climate-vulnerable delta landscape along the Chao Phraya River, particularly the former port area of Khlong Toei.
Students developed small-scale, replicable “acupuncture” design proposals addressing flooding, drought, brownfield reclamation, waste reuse, informal settlements, and public space, guided by the themes of equity, permeability, and beauty.
A field trip to Thailand enabled collaboration with local communities and experts, followed by participation in the United Nations 2023 International Water Workshop in New York City. The final projects were compiled into a publication and traveling exhibition.
